B‑56 U‑frame Twistlock (Transversal Lock)
The CONTECH® dovetail or U‑frame twistlock B‑56 is a point‑load bottom twistlock designed to secure ISO container corner castings on board vessels. It is used in combination with the elongated dovetail U‑frame FR‑34BQ 55°, typically mounted on gangway columns or other structural positions where hatch cover movement must be accommodated.
The elongated FR‑34BQ foundation allows the hatch cover to move freely—for example during vessel flexing, rolling, or tidal deformation—without transferring harmful forces into the container or ship structure. This prevents damage to the corner casting, the twistlock, and the underlying steelwork.
The B‑56 is specifically engineered for situations where the sliding direction of the dovetail foundation is rotated 90° relative to the longitudinal axis of the container. In these transversal installations, a standard twistlock cannot follow the expected locking path. The B‑56 accommodates these perpendicular sliding forces and ensures a safe, positive lock under point‑load conditions.
